Youngblood: The Satellite- Monday October 24th, 2011 Reviewed

These guys took me by surprise, I did not know what to expect but they came on stage like a crazy tribe of jumping wild animals just released from their cage, It was madness and chaos in a few seconds, and people loved, I mean loved it!

With their bouncing rhythms (the word is weak as vocalist Sam Martin could not stop jumping nor stay one second at the same place), Youngblood Hawke, the band named after a novel by Herman Wouk, filled up the Satellite’s stage with fun, feel-good dance-party tunes which, I would not be surprised, could well be the next radio hits.

The enthusiasm was infectious, the crowd was making one unique jumping wave, and the positive vibe did not go down one minute during their set. Energy-pop, catchy melodies, sing-along giant choruses, the whole thing was breathing youth and a careless I-want-to-have-fun.

Six on stage, they were hard to follow in their constant moves, and being at the front did not help as their numbers turned into a sweaty work-out, and were making the whole room dizzy.

And before Sam Martin had actually combined some hip-hop delivery into one of the songs they played, I could see it coming, as their dance-assaults had this underlying hip-hop attitude all along.

The band was recently founded by friends vocalist-keyboardist Sam Martin, and guitarist Simon Katz (originally from Iglu and Hartly, a band I never heard about) and soon joined by other friends, Tasso Smith (on guitar), Alice Katz (on vocals, percussion) and Nik Hughes (on drums). They haven’t existed long enough to have a wikipedia page but already have an EP on bandcamp (http://youngbloodhawke.bandcamp.com) and a Monday residency at the Satellite this month of October.

When you see bands like Foster the People reaching the top in such a fuliginous manner, I would think that Youngblood Hawke and their chaotic dance-floor parties may have some serious chances,… wait, they could be the next Foster the People turned more pop-hip-hop,… I just wonder how long they will be able to go on with this jumpy youth-affirmation.
