Its been nearly 20 years since I last saw X. I can say this band left a huge impression on me and have never left my side through all this time. From shouting out random song lyrics to mindlessly humming melodies, X was a band that not only could I relate to- but that pissed other people off
In about 1984 I was pretty much obsessed with them and wanted to be lead singer Exene Cervanka more than anything. Her irreverent deameanor along with the cold cool of Chrissie Hynde, gave me the bar of perfection that every female artist has had to reach in order to gain my attention. To this day I cannot find anyone who can hold a candle to either one of these women.
The band of John Doe, DJ Bonebrake, and Billy Zoom were West Coast cool to an East Coast girl. They hung on my walls, I waited at back doors, I met them I fan-girled. Everyone from that time has a story. You either loved um or hated them and I loved them more than normal. Then again who judges normal?
In 1984 this was their set list

This week I will once again speak to this amazing band. Sunday night I will head off to Boston to see the screening of the "rockumentary" X The Unheard Music and a performance of Los Angeles in its entirety. I am dying to see how time has treated them. I am interested to see how a band with such grace can transition for angsty brats to mature punk royalty.. if they have done that as well as I have, Sunday will be outstanding.
Note that the band will be in New York City at Irving Plaza this Friday and Saturday. Go get um…
