I have reached January, and that’s already 19 articles and I don’t think it is necessary to continue.
All these articles were published by Spin magazine, only this year. Has Spin magazine become Courtney Love’s personal diary or free promo-platform? Or is it really free? At one point a magazine stops doing journalism and become a kiss-ass rag for some declining and controversial rock figure? Not all these articles are flattering but let’s not forget she is a person who thinks no publicity is bad publicity. What is this? Were all these stories newsworthy? Certainly not! This last one published last Tuesday about Love expressing her disdain for saxophones in rock & roll should be put in the who-fucking-cares-box and never been published anywhere.
So I got intrigued by Spin’s excessive covering of everything-Courtney, and according to this article on Poynter.org, Spin journalists have been on the field since Kurt Cobain died: ‘On a much smaller level, my career, and on a much larger level, Spin’s place in the world completely dovetailed with the rise of Nirvana’ declared Craig Marks, the magazine’s music editor at the time, who ‘never met Cobain’, but ‘later reported extensively on his widow’, and ‘ had good relationships with Janet Billig, one of Nirvana’s managers, and the band’s record label, DGC.’ So can this still be considered as objective journalism? Absolutely not. The same article reports that Marks said that ‘Spin Editor-in-Chief Bob Guccione, Jr., and the rest of the staff ‘recognized that Nirvana were integral to Spin’s chances in the world’. In 1992, they even let Jonathan Poneman, co-founder of Nirvana’s label Sub Pop, write a cover story about Love and Cobain for the magazine, which ‘pushed back against a negative Vanity Fair profile that year.’ Marks recognized himself something was totally wrong ‘We were purely a PR mouthpiece for Kurt and Courtney at that time’, saying that this move was ‘a jaw-dropping error in all of journalistic integrity’, but they did it anyway because they wanted to be as big as Rolling Stone.
Apparently, this unethical relationship hasn’t ended with Cobain’s death and Courtney Love’s stories (good or bad) continue to feed Spin’s appetite almost every day, and I am not even counting Idolator and Celebuzz, which are members of SpinEntertainment, or Stereogum, Idolator, Buzznet, PureVolume, Brooklyn Vegan, Gorilla Vs. Bear, Pop Matters, Absolute Press (and so many others) which are all part of SpinMusic,… SpinMedia actually operates over 40 pop culture websites! Wow this is such a narrow world despite this illusion of diversity! Spin used Nirvana’s fame to get where it is right now, and this is still going on with Courtney Love. Now you understand why this fame-obsessed whore is always in the media.
