Deadmau5 has been around for some time, 8-9 years may be? And by now you are probably used to see his trademark logo, which shares a close resemblance to another famous mouse, and I bet you know which one I am talking about! But, according to Rolling Stone, it is now that The Disney corporation has decided to sue the EDM star because his logo resembles Mickey Mouse way too closely for the big company’s taste.
But Deadmau5 is not ready to give up, and he tweeted, using a Tom & Jerry avatar by the way…
‘landed home to some interesting news: looks like Disney officially just filed in opposition of my trademark… Lawyer up mickey. Disney thinks you might confuse an established electronic musician / performer with a cartoon mouse. That’s how stupid they think you are.’
The musician’s attorney, Dina LaPolt, also seems very confident, and declared to Rolling Stone:
‘The deadmau5 front facing mau5head is a registered trademark in 30 countries worldwide. In June of last year, deadmau5 applied to register the front facing mau5head with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Disney is now opposing the U.S. filing. Given that the mau5head and other identifying deadmau5 trademarks have been used in the U.S. and around the world for almost a decade, we wonder why Disney is only now coming after deadmau5. Our client will not be bullied by Disney and is prepared to fight to protect his rights to his property.’
This registration is a big deal because it would allow the logo to appear on a lot of stuff such as toys, electronics, BMX bikes, paper and leather goods… and this is what may have triggered the lawsuit as two large round mouse ears on toys may be indeed confusing people… well people who are a bit out of it, but these people do exist…
To be honest I found Joel Zimmerman (his real name) and his lawyer really delusional, do they realize what the Disney corporation is? How wealthy and powerful it is? EDM may be the new money making machine but they are nothing compared to Disney – and if Disney did wait for EDM to get very huge to file this lawsuit, and make more money, this is definitively evil! Seriously, not all mice are equal. I could not careless for Deadmau5 and his music, but in this case I have no choice but to root for the undermouse.
