What Should We Do With The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame?

And you Monkee Man? No Hall Of Fame for you…

I have this vision of Jann Wenner as the Octavian of rock and roll, lolling about in a toga with Jon Landau and a list of musicians  names and a pin, pricking those who will never will make the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Look obviously, not everybody is going to agree about who deserves a first ballot entry to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame but what we should all agree is that the voting be beyond reproach and it is far from it. Nobody trusts Jann, neither his publications nor any other manner in which man conducts his business.

Shelley Mitchell noted: ” Monkees, Moody Blues, and the late Bob Welch.. SO many other greats have been not simply overlooked, but INTENTIONALLY snubbed, despite petition campaigns, spearheaded by many thousands of frustrated fans. It’s outrageous and it’s absurd. This musicians’ union needs to unify, and create an OFFICIAL HoF, and put Wenner and his cronies’ highly-biased monopoly to an END.”

One of the major problems is the Musicians Union is very very weak. Forget a rock and roll hall of fame, rock and rollers can’t get a pension plan, all they can do is spend their life working and then die because they can’t afford a healthcare plan (well, till recently). Rock needs a minimum wage and a contract more than it needs a hall of fame.

The Baseball Hall Of Fame, also a privately owned institution,  are elected as follows: “Players are currently inducted into the Hall of Fame through election by either the Baseball Writers Association of America (or BBWAA), or the Veterans Committee,[13] which now consists of three subcommittees, each of which considers and votes for candidates from a separate era of baseball.”

But the rock and roll hall of fame is a cloudy mess of an election process, an uber-self-important doling out of gifts that plays as an adjunct to Rolling Stone Magazine: “The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was created on April 20, 1983, by Atlantic Records founder and chairman Ahmet Ertegun. He assembled a team that included attorney Suzan Evans, Rolling Stone magazine editor and publisher Jann S. Wenner, attorney Allen Grubman and record executives Seymour Stein, Bob Krasnow and Noreen Woods”

But with the passing of Ertegun and the passing of time, it has become Jann’s plaything, his King Kong towering over rock and roll and tending to a legacy built around his legacy. A legacy based on 1960s and 1970s rock and roll, which doesn’t get bubblegum or EDM, or pop in its many flavors but grasps Arena rock in its sweaty paws and won’t let go.

We can take our heroes not making it.

We can even take the rock writers who made rock and roll what it is seen as not getting a vote.

What we can’t take is Warren Zevon not being in any HoF worth its name. Or Paul Williams. Or Kiss. Or Joan Jett. So on and so forth. This is beyond a matter of opinion and into the realm of a matter of perception as to what rock and roll is.Can you imagine any other music institute, can you imagine ASCAP embroiled in this crap? Wenner should sell it and go back to doing what he does best: putting Bruce Springsteen at the top of lists

If there was some form of Music Union, they should put it on their wish list along with, for fucks sake already, a goddam pension plan.
