Twisted Sister is a band whose false sense of importance never failed to amaze me. Even in their ‘hayday’ they were nothing but a joke. Any right minded music fan found no redemption in Dee Snider he was a farce and well talent wise, he made a spectacle but that’s about it.
There were (of course) Twisted Sister fans, mullet wearing kids from the ‘burbs who found this pussy metal something to shock their parents with. Dee grew up and became even more annoying. Trying to be a musical Howard Stearn but instead just an idiot not even funny enough to watch. He keeps popping up too, on reality TV and other has been outlets.
This leads me to wonder who the fuck is bankrolling the new documentary ‘We Are Twisted F*cking Sister!’ , you figure their average fan is about 45 so maybe its generation ‘has been’ that thinks this is a necessary time capsule- no idea. But theyre surely as stoked as I am disgusted and here are your details of the band who did nothing but waste air space.
Guitarist Jay Jay French says, “the history of Twisted is really those 10 years in the clubs. The years we spent clawing our way through the bar scene. It was learning how to make order out of chaos, how to confront bad situations, how to win in bad situations, and prepare us for the future. And it was unique to Twisted. I talk to hundreds of bands and nobody’s ever gone through what we went through. It’s who we are, and it’s why we are, and why we do what we do.”
Horn says, “I first met Twisted Sister when I interviewed lead singer Dee Snider and guitarist Jay Jay French while researching my previous film, The Nomi Song. Jay Jay then appeared in the film describing the wild scene that erupted when Nomi, a German operatic counter-tenor and performance artist, was booked to open for Twisted Sister in a club in suburban New Jersey. After the film was completed, Jay Jay and I spent an afternoon with him filling my head with stories about Twisted’s own wild shows in the bars. Jay Jay’s description of what he called ‘bar band shtick’ (the various ploys they used to engage their crowd in the bars) sounded to me like it’s own kind of performance art — just for a whole other type of crowd. This sounded interesting and the more I followed up on it the more I realized there was a real story there. And it became much bigger than I ever imagined.”
Here’s a clip to make you cringe.

Message for Helen:
I had read your post last year and I just wanted to let you know that the Twisted movie is opening in NY on Feb 19th at the Cinema Village and I would like to invite you, if you would like to come. Obviously you are a skeptic, to say the least(!), but I didn’t come to this movie as a fan myself and had no agenda in making it. I am not trying to sell anyone Twisted Sister but it’s a very entertaining story and, who knows, you might be entertained 🙂
The former editor of the former NY Rocker said, “An absorbing, even fascinating film that takes as its subject a band I never gave a hoot about.”
If you are interested, you can get back to me and I’ll give you the details (hopefully I’ll have more specifics soon).
Andy Horn
Thanks so much for reaching out- Im sad to say I am not in NY but wish you the best of luck on your premier night!
Would there be an online screener available?
