Long time readers of rock nyc will know that there is nobody I write about more than Tomas Doncker except maybe Taylor Swift, they have something in common: they are both consummate musicians and songwriters and both are nearing the apex of their career.
Anybody who saw the Doncker Band at the Cutting Room earlier this year doesn’t need me to tell them there is nobody funk jam band in the world today. I would pay cash money to see the Doncker Band in a battle with the Roots. I have heard both bands play and TDB would blow them so far off stage it would be embarrassing. 25 years ago they TDB would be legendary, 25 years ago they would be teaching the E Street Band how it is done.
The This Is The Tomas Donker Band’s Howling Wolf EP is now available on Spotify and there is no reason not to blast it loud. Doncker, even in the three years I’ve known him, has improved and improved as a singer and his vocal on “Spoonful” is a mesmerizing horrorshow of drugs, sex, fear. It sounds lived in.
On July 8th, Doncker will be releasing Moanin’ At Midnight, a full tribute album to the great Howling Wolf, and, after write ups in most of the world press, including the Huffington Post, and interviews on CNN, now Guitar World are getting into the mix. Whenever I mention how great a guitarist Gary Clark Jr is, Tomas can’t help but smirk a little. There is a full scale interview coming soon to Guitar World, because, let’s be straight here, Doncker is one of our top guitarists period. Guitar World had the exclusive premiere of “Evil” on Friday and you can hear and read about it here.
To put it simply, Tomas is a great guy and a master musician. He is one of the greats. Listen and learn!
