This Year's Drug: Molly

Coming into Los Angeles? Busy reviewing Trinidad James  excellent debut album, I noticed "One More Molly" an ode to the super duper Ecstasy, infamous for Madonna's namecheck.

Sex and drugs and rock and roll is a time honored tradition, though, really, often crouched in other language. "Wild Horses"? Marianne Faithful claiming heroin won't keep her from Mick (ps it did). But with its drugged up "She's looking at me" through its slow downed musical break down at the end, "One More Molly" is pretty much the drug song de jour.

I googled it and came up with a CNN story by one Marina Csomo. And she came up  with this: "This year, molly was abundant at music festivals — if you knew where to look. At Miami's Ultra Music Festival, fliers littered the landscape mentioning her name like missing child posters: "Have you seen molly?" And when Madonna took to the stage to introduce an artist, the pop star asked the audience: "How many people in this crowd have seen molly?" A slew of cheers answered, though Madonna later said she'd been referring to a song, not to an illegal drug. Hip-hop artists claim they know her — she's casually mentioned by 2 Chainz in the Nicki Minaj track "Beez In the Trap," by Childish Gambino in his song "Unnecessary," by Kanye West in "Mercy," by Danny Brown in "Die Like a Rockstar."

The DEA, who have never found a recreational drug they've liked, ever, had this to say about Molly: "Suppliers are making it look like something that is safe and easy to take, but in many cases, you're playing Russian roulette."

The buzz is essentially ecstasy by any other name with less side effects. Sounds good to me. And if Trinidad James recommends it  according to MTV News: "All the people are like, 'I don't know what it is, but every time I hear the song, I just wanna do it. "That's a terrible excuse, but go 'head, get high, go 'head. Blame Trinidad, blame it on me."
