I listened to the Taylors Swifts "We Are Never Getting Back Together" and I will not lie, I had a big run on sentence of venom to spill. I cant stand Taylor, her folksy innocence makes me wretch. I would never have listened to it if I had not heard The Vaccines version of the song. Seriously I needed to be babble to compare it right?
Well there simply is no comparison. Taylor's 'valley girl' speak (remember that phrase?) and hiccup highs fit the song just perfectly. In this song shes not so 'woe is me' and is a bit more confident than I am used to- and I am not Swift scholar. I don't care enough to follow so closely but I do need to know just enough to form an opinion. I decided to ask around to a few high school girls to see if Taylor actually was popular in their circle. Yes. She is, shes 'cute' and 'awesome' and 'sounds like us'. Wait, she sounds like them? I'm speaking to 16 year old girls who feel that Taylor speaks like they do. So in fact, Taylor is the voice of the generation behind her."She's cute", yet some of the girls didn't think Taylor was the right person for break up advise simply because of the cuteness. That makes a great deal of sense, in a very odd way. When I was 16 girls had role models like Madonna, Pat Benetar, or Cindy Lauper. Not exactly speaking our language either. "Papa Don't Preach'?, "Love Is a Battlefield", "She Bop"? Girls are too smart and too empowered in 2012 for that shit- and it shows, and Taylor knows that and she owns them.
The Vaccines? Well they're just being silly British Boys. A warm up tune sloppy and never meant for serious consideration. Its a bunch of guys having fun with a pop tune and its adorable and complete useless sound. Yet, one of my subjects felt the Vaccines were a better livery system than Taylor because it sounded more powerful. Huh? Actually, the The best part is when singer, tries to do the dialog. So funny and so well staged. I can promise you this will be done live and the crowd will go insane and everyone will shout the lyrics and it'll be like karaoke night at the local. But if anything I'm glad I found The Vaccines version- if only to force me to hear Taylor Swifts.
Yeah she sucks but not as bad as I first though. Oh, and The Vaccines are adorable.
