I remember seeingthe Tyde a long time ago, it must have been 2002 or 2003, and since I hadn’t heard much about them. All I remember was the blonde hair in the face of the singer (funny how memory works) and some sunny power-pop tunes….
Since The Tyde formation by the Rademaker brothers, Darren and Brent, and Christopher Gunst, born from some leftovers of the cowboy-psychedelic band Beachwood Sparks, the line-up has changed a lot over the years, but the sound is another idea of the beach than pure surf rock, but still very beachy-sunny, and wasn’t there a surfer-cartoon-figure on their 2003 album?
Their retro style, a mix of country-folk-bring-the tambourines, with Rademaker’s Dylan-esque nasal voice, put big smiles on faces, and trigger some hand-clapping with bright and upbeat melodies held together by solid hooks.
On Tuesday night, they were six on the small Echo stage, with two persons (a guy and a girl) on vocals and percussion, they were that perfect California-happy-music-incarnation, with long-legged-blonde girl, hair in your face and light wind through your ears,… and no it’s not a cliché, I live there and it is a beautiful place,… like the Tyde’s music, sparkling like a Christmas garland in August, with lots of harmonies and some fantastic rhythms.
They played a medley of songs from their 3 albums simply entitled ‘Once’, ‘Twice’ and ‘Three's Co.’, mostly from ‘Twice’ actually, ending with their Beach-Boys-I-love-surfing ‘Shortboard City’. But there also was this new song from their forthcoming record entitled ‘Situations’ that Darren Rademaker sang in duo with the female singer; it was a very quiet and melancholic one, with that memorable line, talking about some sort of situations, ‘And it is a motheeeeer,…. Fuckeeeeer’,… oh well, whatever bad happens, at least we have the sunshine here in California.
