The second band taking the stage on Monday night at the Satellite had installed a pedal steel guitar, and the first song they played had, of course, a country feeling, doubled with the soulful vocals of Luke Paquin, who was having his hair long and a certain army-cowboy look
But there was more than this upbeat country ambiance during their rather short set, which went from Tom Petty-esque rock numbers (‘Your baby’) having a familiar resonance all along, to songs with a real catchiness and big choruses mixed with a pop sensibility, as I found the song ‘Get 'em Next Time, Tiger’ to have a true Kinks’ mood.
But just follow me, The Street And Babe Shadow is in fact Hot Hot Heat guitarist Luke Paquin’s side project, and under this T Rex’s-song-moniker, the band has self-released an album with Paquin’s girlfriend, Stone Darling’s Paige Stark (who was not there on Monday night) on vocals on some tracks. I like when bands interbreed like this, it is so confusing!
The quartet played a broad range of songs, with bassist Jimmy Sweet and pedal steel player Dan Horne, who switched to synth for some songs, and their last one turned into this long psychedelic song, with guitar solos combined with the crying pedal steel, just another proof there is always a possibility to rewrite your own page of americana music.
