The Flaming Lips Join Miley Cyrus For 'Lucy In The Sky with Diamonds'

Lips and tongue

The Flaming Lips have been in the news A LOT lately, for the best and the worst… this item could be about the best,… or the worst, you’ll decide. For months they have been teasing us with that ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ tribute album, and it seems the thing is upon us now,… or close to.  The album will actually be released on October 28th via Warner Bros. Records.

When I heard  the news I wasn’t really excited for two reasons, first, do we really need to re-record the Beatles honestly? The original is great and this new one seems to be like a lazy attempt to make some bucks off an old classic. Plus, there is the ‘With A Little Help From My Fwends’ part that I am not very found of, when the fwend is Miley Cyrus! I personally can’t stand her but Wayne Coyne and she are best friends now, so we have to do with big-mouth-Cyrus,… doesn’t anyone else think this girl is way too loud during interviews? But she looooooves the Lips, as you can tell according to her declaration to Rolling Stone magazine: ‘If you listen to the Flaming Lips, it’s hard to listen to anything else. I’ve been listening to them for the past three months, to the exclusion of all other music – literally. I’ve erased everything else on my iPhone. My entire world is wrapped up in this collaboration and magical friendship.’ I can almost hear her annoying voice saying this and I am certain that big-head Coyne got very flattered by the compliment. So flattered that the Lips are even working on new songs for Miley’s next album!

On Wednesday night, Steven Drozd and Wayne Coyne joined the pop-porn young star onstage in Manchester to perform ‘Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds’, and according to The Future Heart, they even played it three consecutive times. It sounds crazy but the performance was actually taped for the Billboard Music Awards which will air Sunday May 18th on ABC. The studio version of the song will be the first single of the album.

Of course videos of the performance have surfaced and you see Wayne and Miley sharing the stage with glittering silver and gold matching coats/capes, I don’t know how to call these things but they looked like two sparkling parrots waving on a float for a Christmas parade. Wayne is even wearing a sort of skinless muscle jumpsuit which does bring even more weirdness. But people are screaming so much it’s difficult to heat the chorus and when they sing it, a lot of glittery stuff is falling for the sky,… of course. But remove the shiny, the sparkly and the confetti,… and I am not sure this joke-y performance was even necessary? But,… Wait a minute, some proceeds from ‘With A Little Help From My Fwends’ will benefit Oklahoma City dogs and cats through the Bella Foundation, a local nonprofit that helps low-income, elderly or terminally ill pet owners with the cost of veterinarian’s bills. So it was totally necessary! ‘Miley and I and everybody associated with the Flaming Lips are trying desperately to help the animal welfare situation in Oklahoma City, which is appalling, I’ve been all around the world, and I’ve never seen another city that has as many homeless animals as here’, declared the Lips’ frontman to Rolling Stone.

If you pre-order ‘With A Little Help From My Fwends’ you will get an instant download of ‘Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds’ featuring Miley Cyrus and Moby. And what about the other fwends you will ask? They may include MGMT, Sean Lennon, My Morning Jacket, Foxygen, Moby, Phantogram, Morgan Delt, Treasure MammaL, Stardeath and White Dwarfs, New Fumes, Birdflower, Sunbears, and even more. It should be fun.
