The Clash To Win "Silver Clef Award"

The Clash ended 30 years ago.  Thirty years ago the world was a very different place.  Thirty years ago if you’d heard more than ‘Rock the Casbah’ you were an oddity and if you were a fan you hated that song.  Times have changed and although the legend Joe Strummer died in 2002, the band seems to be gaining popularity as the kids rediscover what their parents once loved.

That being said the band is up for an award called The Silver Clef Award.  I am not a fan of awards, especially music awards but the Silver Clef is sponsored by Nordoff Robbin Foundation who’s tag line is “A music charity dedicated to transforming the life of vulnerable adults and children”, noble as hell. What I love most is listed in their ‘what we do’ section of their website

Nordoff Robbins is the UK’s leading provider of music therapy services. Our trained network of music therapists work with people of all ages and with a range of conditions. We deliver over 50,000 music therapy sessions per year in care homes, day centres, hospitals, schools and our own centres. We are also developing a range of other music and health projects aimed at bringing music to more and more people in local communities.

Everyone responds to music – it affects our minds, bodies and feelings. Through music we can help to:

  • Improve physical health and ability
  • Address emotional and behavioural difficulties
  • Develop communication and social skills
  • Increase creativity, self-esteem and confidence

What a beautiful organizaitno and what a great fit for The Clash to be noticed by. So I will actually cut these guys some slack, simply because the organization seems so legit.

David Munns, chairman of  Nordoff Robbins said: “The Clash’s music has just as much influence today as it did when they first came onto the music scene in 1976.

“It is no wonder London Calling has been described as one of the most influential rock albums of all time. Having been enormously influential in the UK music scene for over 35 years, I can think of no band more deserving of this award than The Clash.”

Other winners to be honored on June 28th are pretty odd (well one of them is!)  Coldplay, Labrinth, Alison Moyet and Barry Gibb and Vampire Weekend.  How did Vampire Weekend get in ont that?!

Congrats to The Clash, Amen.
