I keep hearing a lot about a band called The 1975.  They’ve got extremely mixed reviews amongst the group of people I share music tastes with, so I decided that I should find out about them for myself.  I went to listen to their song “Chocolate”, and watch the music video.

I was immediately intrigued by how the video is in grayscale, giving it a clean and midnight-noir feel.  There’s also no denying that the band is a quartet of extremely good-looking boys, so that’s a plus and probably is the reason for their increasing fan base.  It’s obviously big-budget, and has an expansive feel.  I really love it from an artistic standpoint- it’s shot so well and really diverse, making it extremely interesting to watch.

As for the music, it’s not half bad.  Matthew, the vocalist, has a very unique style of singing that accentuates his Manchester accent and is totally fangirl-worthy.  The drums are fantastic and the bassline puts the band in a position where they have a very dancey-feel, kind of like an alt. pop band.  I adore the melody and its complexity, because in all honesty, bands like this have the potential to be very boring.  The 1975 avoid this by throwing in little riffs, changing up the melody, and throwing in little surprises.  It’s very clever.

I think this band has a massive future ahead of them.  Their debut album just came out in September, and they reached the No. 1 spot on UK’s Billboard six days after, beating Nine Inch Nails’ comeback album.

These boys are gonna be big.
