I had never heard of this woman, and honestly, I don’t want to hear about her anymore! On Monday, Tanya Tagaq won, for her album ‘Animism’, the Polaris Music Prize, a music award annually given to the best full-length Canadian album. The prize comes with a hefty $30,000 check, and this unknown (to me) singer was in competition with Arcade Fire, Drake, Mac deMarco, Owen Pallett to name only a few of the nominees. But this is not the most shocking part of the story. When she gave her acceptance speech, there was the usual thank you and ‘The album itself came from a very awesome place, I couldn’t be more happy,’ but suddenly it turned ugly, very ugly:
‘People should wear and eat seal as much as possible because if you can imagine an indigenous culture thriving and surviving on sustainable resource, wearing seal and eating it, it’s delicious and there’s lots of them.’
‘I really believe that if hipsters can make flower beards in, then you can do it with seal, Come on, guys.’
First of all, where did this come from? You get a prize and you want to slaughter seals? Secondly, who is this idiot? Who can, in his/her right mind, encourage fur wearing!!! She also added ‘Fuck Peta’ which is very classy…
Since, she was asked to ‘clarify’ her discourse, a totally unnecessary move as it was pretty clear to me. Again, she is an idiot. She said she has a ‘big mouth’ and that her comment was ‘very specifically targeted at the seal ban’… and talking about Peta, she added ‘There is a relative level of poverty in Newfoundland as well. Those protesters are taking food out of kids’ mouths.’
Again, complete idiot! I don’t think seals are endangered by indigenous hunt, does she even know who is killing these animals and profiting of seal fur trade? This is the same woman who posted this photo of her baby next to a baby seal freshly killed, and then she complained she was harassed online… what did she expect? Fresh flowers at her door? She likes to provoke or she is stupid, or both, while hundreds of thousands of baby seals are slaughtered for their fur every year and this is ridiculously cruel and unnecessary. Just read this, (‘The slaughter of seals is incredibly cruel, a post mortem survey has shown that 42% of these babies are skinned alive ‘) it will make you vomit on each Tanya Tagaq’s album.
