This is the art of the art, this is how hits are made in 2015 and whether you or I think it is real music, it is really real hit pop. In 2015, at least in theory, on stage the likes of Skrillex will improvise to a setlist and in the recording stufio nothing is ever left to chance.
Seems this weeks singles have the combined appeal of bananas and sardines. Leave it to the UK to show us Americans what theyre made of.
Maybe five years ago, I was at a house party where Afrobeats were performing and standing to his side, I watched him manipulate tapes, beats, volumes, and the thing about EDM is when you watch a great DJ perform it is like watching a great guitarist take a solo and it is all in the hands and when you can’t see… No wait, much like EDM this review suffers from ADD
EDM live on stage is both interactive and almost ambient, you can dance to it or you can float by, you can pay attention or you can leave it in the background of your mind. I saw Skrillex at Governors Ball last summer and was so impressed I finally realized he wasn’t Deadmau5 and learnt to love “brostep”! I will be spending New Year’s Eve with Skrillex, Diplo and… A$AP Ferg, Rudimental and Yellowclaw!!!
I got a ticket for Skrillex and Diplo at MSG. Why? I caught some of Skillex’s set at Governors Ball this June and he was terrific and I wanted a closer look and really a MSG is the best place to see a rave and I can’t resist it. I might add that I started listening to recess again, which I kinda dismissed in March but I am beginning to really dig now… so yeah, rave to 2015 folks.
Six of these albums are new to this week and of the old ones it certainly hits me as though Ross and Pharell might not have much staying power. Meanwhile, Frozen -which sucks by the way, has taken the world by storm and I can’t let it go.
Fire Away – Skrillex – Very laid back for dance, rather than fire away it moves around a skittish drum pattern into waves of moogie distraughtness and straight up notes on a piano. We had a word for this when I was growing up, dubstep – C+
