It killed me hating Frozen for months on end. But I love the top two on this list, written about them lots, and seeing them here at the top of the charts is just heaven!
I guess the return of Ed has a lot to do with the upcoming sophomore effort which just might do the difficult: be the same and different at the same time. Lana at # 1, though the real question is what will the US make of it? My gut is it will break pop but if West Coast couldn’t make it on the Singles chart what can here? Well, at least should insure a career touring if she has finally learnt how to play live.
Fucked My Way to The Top – Lana Del Rey – There is the famous story where Alfred Hitchcock wanted to make a movie where a huge ship is discovered with everyone on board dead –don’t know how, don’t know why, no marks nothing. He didn’t make the movie because whatever the solution was, it had to be a disappointment. Except for the names and a few of the places, the exact same thing could be said about this song: it couldn’t live up to its title and it doesn’t come close – B+
Mutineers – David Gray – Joined by the bloke from Lamb (a great band in their own right) , this is a beautiful, slightly muted collection of singer songwriter songs like Elbow without the quirk and also without the anthem. Another great album by Gray that should buy him a larger than cult audience but probably won’t – ALBUM OF THE WEEK – A-
I’ve Seen It All – Bjork – Off her Lar Von Trier movie, this is a spectacular nursery rhyme set to the chugachug of a train with smart aphorisms like “All walls are great if the roof doesn’t fall” while enhancing the strange sad “pennies from heaven” storyline – A
