Black Is The Color Of My True Love’s Hair – Lauryn Hill – This beautiful, powerful woman has a fine and robust voice and she can do many things with it, the one thing she fails to do is show compassion or warmth and it is effecting this Nina Simone cover, in a not entirely negative way – B+

Lauryn Hill And J. Cole Sing About Ferguson, MO

If “Black Rage” is an accidental commentary, J. Cole’s “Born Free” is an “Ohio” for a different generation and another outrage. “That there is no justice kills my soul” Cole sings (not raps) on the Michael Brown tribute, where Cole sobs somewhere between a rap and a song. It is a powerful piano ballad, and it went viral, directly hitting the mark and answering the concerns of many black people.

Active Viewin': rock nyc Concert Picks Week Of 11-25-13

Though he was so great that time, performing Astral Weeks, performing a “Slim Slow Slider” for the ages that it might very well keep you satiated for years. Just not five years. So his show at the Theater at Madison Square Garden on Monday is more than a giving thanks, it is a benediction. Rumor has it, this may be his farewell tour. You have to hope not.
