Crazy Weather – Kevin Jenkins – If Kevin’s sophomore album is all quiet fury, this closer is loud anger, a ransacked guitar based quasi-Hendrix blues soul out, it sounds like everything is going out of control – B+
The “True Groove All Stars” concert at the Cutting Room on March 11 th will be a terrific chance to reacquaint yourself with the wonderfulness that is Sir Tomas, or the opportunity to catch up with his truly all stars, bassist Kevin Jenkins and spoken word maverick Marla Mase (whose new album is gonna blow you away) at the top of the list
I don’t know what is floating your boat in 2014, but I am eagerly awaiting the new Marla Mase and Kevin Jenkins. I’ve heard some of the new Marla Half Life dropping February and would be surprised if it doesn’t emerge as one of the best albums of 2014. Step Inside doesn’t work because of the voice, Kevin has a good voice for sure, and it doesn’t work because of the bass, though the band as a whole goes song after song of strength and determination, it works because the songs are killer
Blondie at Highline were just incredible, you could feel Debbie’s star power tingling and X? And John Doe performing “Look How We Are”? Worth the price of admission in itself. Both bands on the same bill is a real thrill, so get thrilled at Roseland on Friday October 4th
Girl Josephine – Fats Domino – It was always feels like of all the first graduates of rock and roll, Fats gets relegated to the also rans. Here is proof again he was anything but, just wait for the horn on the bridge – A
On A Carousel – The Hollies – This is the sound of the timeless clang of pure pop for now people in the heat of the UK Invasion. Immaculate harmonies, melodies, lyrics and Nash’s first lead singing on the A Side of a single- A+
