Tomas Doncker is not merely a master funk and blues guitarist, not even just a great songwriter, bandleader and label chief, and let’s just forget that he puts on one of the best live shows on the planet. And let’s concentrate on something much more important: he is a good friend of mine.
So forgetting that The “True Groove All Stars” concert at the Cutting Room on March 11 th will be a terrific chance to reacquaint yourself with the wonderfulness that is Sir Tomas, or the opportunity to catch up with his truly all stars, bassist Kevin Jenkins and spoken word maverick Marla Mase (whose new album is gonna blow you away) at the top of the list, so forgetting that. Go because I like Tomas.
Oh wait, yeah, you have another reason to go sse TD… James Chance is making a guest appearance. I am sure that you, like me, are completely obsessed with the masterful Contortion who reinvented the sax for post-punk and put Ze Records on the map back in the 1980s. Well, Tomas used to play guitar in the Contortions and James will be joining the All Stars for a coupla songs.
March 11 th? That is awful close to Spring, right? Maybe the weather will have changed a little, maybe the snow will have receded, but no maybe here: the true Groove All Stars will fire you up. Be there. For my sake if not for yours.
