But is this a R.I.P. FYF fest?
the FYF fest was always going for the unique and original
This means 3 women and 2 men will now be in charge
Sean Carlson may have started the small FYF festival
his legendary aura follows every move he does
This is the FYF Fest week
a very strong and diverse lineup
Who needs Coachella when the FYF fest is happening downtown LA?
She delivered the most memorable set of the festival in its 12 years of existence
The fest has grown far beyond its humble punk origins
Grace Jones’ only confirmed festival date anywhere.
Despite the fact that I was not allowed to bring my camera inside the FYF fest, despite the fact that I had no access to the photo pit, I managed to take some pictures during the 2-day festival, mostly using my iPhone and a small camera. Here is a photo log of these intense 2 days, of course the big acts are missing because it was way too crowded to get close,… except for Morrissey! I was not really close but I found a spot close to a tree, a bit above the rest of the crowd, and it was not so bad…
Faithful to himself, Morrissey still wants to convince us with bravado and courage… and I love the fact that he is still trying, I am well aware that lots of people may have taken all this for bad propaganda, but did you see these giant middle fingers flipped by the queen? And I haven’t even mentioned that his musicians were wearing ‘Crapitol Records’ shirts…
What are you thinking FYF fest, do you want to compete with Glastonbury or Coachella? … you were this cool DIY fest and now you are all grown up and so big. How much did you pay Kanye? More than Frank Ocean? I would like to know, as I was amazed to see that 2-day tickets were still available a few days before the festival,… which didn’t sell out?
The FYF fest takes itself very seriously and the logistics are now those of a big and professional festival, something I regret, and not only because I was camera-free during the whole day, but also because the festival seems to have make a complete U-turn against some of its first core values. In the first years, it had a very local and familial feeling, I miss the days when the festival was held at the very dusty LA State Historic Park when the biggest names were Panda Bear, Thee Oh Sees, Broken Social Scene, Descendants or OFF!… Now we have to deal with Kanye West crowds, and some of the fun is gone.
METZ is another band playing at the FYF Fest this year. I have seen them several times but I want to catch them again as their shows are always an empowering experience with the ghost of Nirvana floating above their explosive sound. I saw them for the first time in 2012 at the Echo and this was my experience at the time:
They were announcing the FYF fest lineup this morning on KCRW, just when I was driving to work, and I have heard the big news which will probably please half of Los Angeles and beyond: Morrissey is headlining!! Good luck with that Sean Carlson! Have you been thinking about a plan B, because Morrissey may cancel at the last minute. But seriously, are you ready for a vegan FYF fest? Because he will demand it, right?
Paul didn’t play the nostalgia vibe too much, of course there were plenty of old songs, but some new ones too, and his dynamism on stage and simplicity while talking to the huge crowd was so comforting. From my seat, he looked like a tiny ant at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, but he ignited the sea of people, and the sing-alongs were heart warming
I continue to go to music festivals despite my hate and love relationship with them, it’s probably the worst place to see a band, as it’s gonna be hot and very crowded, and you are gonna be tired and thirsty… My first day at the FYF fest this year was a perfect example of all this, I struggled the whole day and it was (almost) no fun
I stayed at the main stage to see Future Islands, with its very theatrical frontman Samuel T. Herring doing grand gestures and definitively using his deep cavernous voice, going into some Yeti monster mode, as his main asset. He had tons of presence, he was jumping a lot on electronic music, tapping his chest with…
As I was walking (and I did a LOT of walking that day) I could not see the end of the line, they made us walk and walk around some structure and a parking lot and it took me forever just to reach the end of the line. Then it took me again forever to reach the entrance gate, more than an hour to be exact!
Summer has arrived in California, we had torching temperatures this week reaching the 100s in the valley, meanwhile FYF fest founder Sean Carlson dropped the line up of the festival on KCRW this Friday morning…. This is truly summer time.
the number of bands playing there is overwhelming, once again I will have to make choices will be made and probably will regret to have missed certain bands, it’s unavoidable
I am gonna be super busy for two days once again! On Monday morning, there even was a rumor about Beck joining the fest? It was just a rumor, but who knows…. As a surprise guest during Devandra Banhart or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ set may be?
I was seeing a few ‘straight edge’ t-shirts in the largely-male-dominated crowd, but I obviously couldn’t relate to all these people, who were watching a reunion that they weren’t even hoping for anymore;
They made me think about the band Devotchka, and I am probably not the first one doing the comparison, minus the operatic level of the singer, and filled with more horns
The band, which reunited recently, seemed to be the not-to-be-missed-hardcore-thing, and they sure delivered with a powerful rage, rising hell in a few seconds in front of a giant American flag as the stage background.
The colorful duo from Providence was playing on Sunday afternoon at the FYF fest, and their experimental high-energy aggressive number took many people by surprise, me included. How did they maintain such an experimental crushing-skull-fucking-brain style for such long numbers
Their songs were alternating between almost naked aching vocal harmonies with spiraling guitars and dance numbers, one of the songs had its Radioheadish moments, and these dreamy-melancholic vocals had something to do with Cat Power’s own delivery, however not her smoky vocal presence
There were long installments of synth and electronic beats shimmering and searching for the right groove, like crazy fireflies slowly lightening up, just before the warmth of the vocal harmonies would kick up. There were tribal exotic drums mixed with lots of windy synth
A bandana around his knee, his long hair covering his face all the time, Conor and his bandmates gave a set charged with a wild energy and many political bites. Desaparecidos could be like Bright Eyes on steroids, after all the voice is the same
Their set was a violent chaotic thing, with thunderous guitars building a heavy and aggressive sound. Baldi’s delivery was sometimes raucous, other times tired and detached, often aggressive and screamed with despair and horror, a
They knew how to keep the audience on constant alert with their muscular and destructive songs, outbursts of bipolar rage, and I thought they wouldn’t able to match the energy on the next one but they were proving me wrong each time.
As soon as they played, the energy (and the dust) went to the sky and the dense crowd started their intense crowd surfing; soon it was a human tide, boys and girls landing in the pit and getting evacuated one by one by the security in red alert
I gave up half way through their set, letting the four voluminous girls who were pushing me since the beginning, win my spot,… but it wasn’t an admittance I was way too old for concerts, just too old for fighting against imposing 20-year-old who take too much space.
