There is no ending to this soul revival, and Lael Summer is another example of this successful trend. But the singer-songwriter is not exactly new to the scene, her bio says she could sing every song from 'The Sound of Music' by the age of 2 and brought an entire audience to tears with her rendition of Christina Aguilera’s ‘Beautiful’ when she was only 10!
She is releasing her debut and self-titled EP, featuring 4 songs from her forthcoming album, ‘Burden to Bear’, and streaming it on soundcloud, I can tell that the songs are as diverse as they can be. It would be lazy and reductive to call Lael Summer a soul singer, as her range is definitively wider. Just listen to the plain pop song ‘The Good Fight’, its soaring chorus is almost Aguilera-esque, it is also her first single, and was used in the Stay Imperfect Project, 'a multi-tiered campaign designed to raise awareness about eating disorders and promote self-esteem and empowerment through the performing arts'.
The catchy ‘Kiss and Tell’ finds her again in more jazzy territory, kind of Donald Fagen'esque, with a clear pop twist.
Lael Summer is celebrating the release of her EP at the Triad Theater on August 10 in New York City, and it will be the first time she is performing these songs, as well as songs from her upcoming album on stage, and of course, Iman will attend the show.
