St. Vincent Allegedly Destroyed Chilean Paintings?
This story is so bizarre that I am not sure what to think, but more than the story, the lack of coverage of it is weird. Usually a story like this should have gone viral, whereas only MTV and Stereogum are reporting about it…. But may be I should start reading Spanish! I explain, indie musician Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, was performing in Santiago Chile on Saturday during a South American version of Lollapalooza festival which is intertwined with the visual arts. But she had to stay a few more days in the country for an unexpected reason: she allegedly destroyed a series of artworks that were decorating her dressing room. The paintings were the work of Constanza Ragal Chaigneau and the artist sued Annie Clark for the damages she had done.The singer paid $4,500 and she finally could leave the country, although Spanish media report that she was not prevented to leave Chile.
But one aspect even more curious was the method apparently used by Clark to destroy the artwork. When she was asked about her paintings on Instagram, Constanza Ragal answered that they were destroyed with ‘knives and violence’… However, the comment has now disappeared and neither Annie Clark nor Constanza Ragal have left any trace of the incident in social media. Annie and her fans were even loving and cheerful on Twitter after her very successful performance in Chile: ‘@st_vincent thank YOU so much! Chile loves you! Come back soon’ ‘Thank you so much, Chile! Was just greeted by the sweetest people in Paraguay. #southamericanwelcome.’
No reason was given to explain the destructive act, and I even question the story itself. Is Annie Clark a crazy chick? She has always looked quite normal to me, but I can’t really tell, as I haven’t followed her career very closely… I just thought her last work was going in a too-obvious Byrne-esque direction.
Anyway, may be we will learn more soon, may be we’ll never know, may be it’s an hoax orchestrated by haters, may be Annie Clark is a bit crazy. But let’s suppose it’s true for a minute, let’s say she really destroyed these paintings with a knife, this is a really passionate thing to do, which can only be explained by a passionate feeling, right?… Something bad going on in your life Annie? A bad breakup? …. By the way, is she still dating Carrie Brownstein?
