My friend Steve Diamond, who I must have known for longer than I care to remember, recommended that giving the holiness of the day, between passover and Good Friday, I might want to write about songs of faith. For me, I don’t really do faith (doubt is my strength) but I see Steve’s point of view and he added to it by recommending a list of songs.
When it comes to not faith, much like children, I tend to have no opinion except that I have none. It was a fine idea at the time but in my world it is an idea I have no part of: the children would be nice in theory, believing in god or something bigger than me, or really anything at all: love, friendship, family. Tradition. Which the next three days are filled with. All great ideas but they have nothing to do with my life.
It is more a question of social interaction than really anything else at all, certainly than everlasting life which hits me as very iffy proposition.
So while I love Gopel music, I don’t love it because of God.
This list of songs belong to my friend Steve, who is a very nice guy and a very social guy. I like some of em, “Judas” is an inspired choice, “Faith” a great song by any standards, but is “Stairway To Heaven” really a song of faith? Indeed, how is “Both Sides Now” a song of faith. I mean faith in not knowing?
The mix up here is songs of faith as belief in god and songs as a metaphor for any form of belief… Happy whatever…
