Yesterday I wastrying to figure out what Matt Ward was singing about on his great song “One Life Away” and so I went where I always go when I’m in need of lyric interpretation, songmeaning.com.
I discovered the site back in my Marie Lynn days when she was obsessed with the Shins and we were checking and wanted to know what “Gone For Good” was about. Soon after that we became obsessed with that densest of writer Conor and went to songmeanings.com for elucidation.
Essentially songmeanings.com post the lyric of pop songs followed by an open forum where people argue about what it all means. It’s simple but it says it and and the conversations can be fascinating and very very earnest. One poster discussing “One Life Away” noted that the song -about a man visiting his late girlfriends grave- sounds muffled, as if it’s being heard from inside the graves. That’s pretty fucking astute, dude.
You can’t listen to music without songmeanings, you just can’t.
