Some Photographers Trespassed Neverland A Few Years Ago

Let’s face it, we are still deeply fascinated by Michael Jackson’s story, even 5 years after the King of Pop’s death. A group of intrepid (and outlaw) journalists snuck onto the abandoned Neverland ranch to explore the place at night and even returned several times between December 2007 and March 2008. However, this interview of three of them appeared in Vice only a few days ago and I found the thing interesting because of the mystery and oddity still haunting the place. I supposed that these guys wanted some excitement in their life, trespassing the foreclosed property was illegal of course and Jackson was even still alive when they did it! However, after the search by the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department in 2003, Michael Jackson had deserted the place saying it had been ‘violated’,… an appropriate wording depending on what you think about the controversial subject.

Before anyone starts to defend the King of Pop again, should I remind everyone that the police seized many books of photographs of naked young boys (I know it’s art!), several books of photographs of naked adult men (art again?), plus this book or this one or this one (beware as they contain some sadomasochistic photos or illustrations) some gay artsy book and more of it, and other items showed he was even interested by the history of porn or plain gay porn (this last one is not even found on Amazon, which may tell a lot about the content). Add to this many pornographic magazines, some Barely Legal ones, and if you want to read the whole list you can always download this public access pdf here.

According to Vanity Fair, some 600 exhibits were entered into evidence, including ‘Jackson’s collection of fetish “Barbies,” bare-breasted plastic dolls dressed in S&M gear’… and probably most of them came from this ‘magic’ place called Neverland, and that’s why I can only associate this place with an obvious creepiness.

These photographers decided to ‘visit’ the ranch without thinking too much about it, as they said it was kind of a spur-of-the-moment thing, during Jackson’s stay in Dubai. Despite the guards on site, they sneaked in and explored the weirdness of the place, which has a ‘little boy in pajamas sitting on the moon logo’ everywhere, like a sort of Dreamworks logo rip off? They also discovered stacks and stacks of fan mail, Tommy Mottola on a cover of a magazine with devil’s horns drawn on, eight-foot-tall oil painting of MJ, another one where he is followed by a procession of children, mirrors on four-foot by four-foot platform, and all kind of weird art: ‘And the strange hodgepodge of shit that he had bought that didn’t have any relation to his house. His entire house was filled with these expensive looking, one-off, semi-artistic things.’

As everyone knows, the place is huge, with a petting zoo, an arcade, some amusement park rides, a Disneyland-like railroad train station, a large garden with a collection of children statues, and a mansion with a toy room and game stations set up all around the house…. It only confirms the oddity of the place which will be seen as the most innocent and beautiful place in the world by MJ’s defenders or a real kids’ magnet by other skeptics like me.

But the strangest thing is that the place was still very cleaned and well kept up at the time, although it has been a few years since this raid on Neverland happened, so we can’t guarantee it still looks like this manicured place. You can see a few of their pictures on this website, I imagine they took many more, I know I would have!
