There was a time when I was not appreciating Sleater-Kinney for some reasons that totally escape me now. I remember being among the front rows at a rowdy show during the Sunset Junction fair and people (lots of girls!) were pushing so much that I could not touch the ground and was grasping for air the whole time. As it’s really difficult to discover a band in such scary conditions, I ended up leaving before the end, fearing for my life! However, Sleater-Kinney came back a few times in my life but I wasn’t sure, should I like these screaming females? Although it was mostly about Corin Tucker’s legendary howls, the trio seemed to unleash some estrogen-fueled inner madness at each song, and I may have not been in the right mood at the time?
Then they broke up just when I got interested, and if I truly enjoyed Corin Tucker’s solo – the song ‘Doubt’ is fantastic – then Wild Flag (with Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss) that I had the chance to catch at a show at the El Rey, it is very good to learn that Sleater-Kinney is back for a little while, as they announced it. Last October, they released a song ,‘Bury Our Friends’, but we got another one on Tuesday, while the band was doing a Reddit AMA in the morning.
This is a great come back as the fury contained in this second song, ‘Surface Envy’, truly demonstrates it. The descending crescendo of the guitar starting the song with the pounding drums combined with Tucker’s famous yell are a total thrill, it’s an empowering full-force ride that culminates into some serious damage. The song is loud, riotous, it jumps right in your face from start to finish, any Sleater-Kinney fan will like its raw immediacy.
The three riot grrls said on Reddit they were ‘enjoying being together making music again’, but they have no plans for the distant future, adding ‘we’ll make the next few months as amazing as they can possibly be!’
Check out their upcoming tour dates on their website, but beware, a lot of them are already sold out (no date in Los Angeles?), ‘their album ‘No Cities To Love will come out on January 20th, thus too late to make the list of the best of 2014, but don’t miss it nevertheless.
