Singles Going Steady: New Singles Review Week Of June 29th, 2015

Overlord – Lamb Of God – Three years after their last release, Randy on the bombs sound more like Soundgarden than anything human, and while the plod of the hard rock first three minutes is new territory it is only new for them, the final three minutes is business as usual but the riff remains the same and it isn’t one of their best – C

Lonely – ZZ Ward – Well, it sure ain’t “3x” but the chorus is killer even if the verses aren’t as good as she might believe – B-

Nothing But Trouble – Lil Wayne And Charlie Puth – From the upcoming “808” documentary, Charlie Puth is doing nothing but favors for himself, that soulfulness will make him a go to guy always soon enough. Here he meshes surprisingly well with Weezy though the song isn’t very good – C+

Cough It Up – The Front Bottoms – This is another piece of speak sing, though by the half way mark it moves into high gear with a wondrous middle age… Another song that misses but not by much – C+

679 (featuring Remy Boyz) – Fetty Wap – A huge follow up to “Trap Queen”, hooky enough which is his point, but it lacks the surprise quality – B-

Baby, Don’t You Lie To Me – The Fratellis – I quite liked Codeine Velvet Club, so at the very least I am going to prefer this catchy pop rocker from Glasgow – B

Morning Sun – Robin Thicke – So why do people hate Robin most? Because he gets laid a lot? Because Paula wouldn’t forgive him despite his grovelling? Because he ripped off Marvin Gaye? Well, if you hate him this won’t change your mind, though I quite like its falsetto based soulfulness – B+

100 Featuring Drake – Game – Drake’s verse is pretty good -an odd worry that he has too much confidence, Game has always been a good rapper and he is good here, it is a dark travel though rap worlds – B
