This story puts once again the country to shame, really! Last Tuesday, 11-year-old Sebastian de la Cruz sang the national anthem before some game of the NBA finals in San Antonio, doing an amazing job and giving a mariachi flavor to ‘The Star-Spangle Banner’. However, his performance triggered a flood of disgusting racist tweets such as:
‘Can’t believe they had the nerve to have a beaner singing the national anthem of America #smh’
‘There’s a little Mexican kid singing the national anthem … What has the world come to?’
‘9 out of 10 chance that kid singing national anthem is illegal’
… no need to continue.
When you think the country has made some progress, the monster shows its ugly head again! And there were a LOT of them, probably coming from fat white middle-age guys gorging on beers and chips on their couch while watching the game. The little guy, who was wearing a mariachi costume, was filling in for country singer Darius Rucker who had canceled at the last minute, so you can imagine the reaction of these pigs when they saw him! But Sebastien demonstrated a maturity that goes well beyond his years, shutting up the haters in a TV interview:
‘With the racist remarks, it was just people — how they were raised. My father and my mama told me you should never judge people by how they look’
Plus these redneck barbarians had all wrong of course, the kid is totally American, born and raised in San Antonio,… not that it would matter if he were American or not, he sang it with such heart!
And Sebastian didn’t let the hatred stop him! He sang the National Anthem again on Thursday, wearing again a Mariachi outfit, and I don’t know if he realized how courageous it was. The awesome kid sang that shitty song with the same conviction and fervor, and, of course, without lip synching. I hope Mrs. Beyonce Carter was watching!
