So… how do we feel about this one then? Has there ever been a really good Beatles movie? I mean, not starring the Beatles. I would claim there are two… “Nowhere Boy” and “I wanna Hold Your Hand”. especially the latter where a young Robert Zemeckis absolutely caught lighning and Beatlemania in a bottle, with one of the most directly sexy scenes in Beatle history, Nancy Allen caressing George Harrisson’s guitar!
What these two movies have in common is that they aren’t that big; they are Hollywood triumphs (Zemeckis was an unknown) but they had a passion for their subject matter.
So the news that Ron Howard has been chosen by Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono to direct a motion pictured based upon the Beatlemania years, is a mixed blessing. But since this is a documentary, perhaps the most useless documentary in rock and roll history, it might have … introduce the Beatles to a new audience??? Sure, the way “Speed” introduced people to race car enthuisiasts of the 1970s.
It just seems as though this is a story told time after time after time and I could see maybe a biopic integrating documentary footage sort of what happened the day after a hard day’s night, filmed in black and white, with the four somewhere between themselves on their hard day’s night self, slowly turning to full color… something like that.
But another documentary. that’s exploitation of the Beatles name -enough is enough already.
Is it too early to say I hate Ron Howard’s beatles movie?
