So Nicki Minaj’s performance at the Grammys made Catholic League president Bill Donohue all upset? Jesus, what a surprise! I have to say she had put everything on her side, showing up on the carpet redder than a cardinal, arm in arm with the pope, calling her number an exorcism with choirboys, priests and monks, and even levitated on stage like the reincarnation of St. Teresa of Avila! I am sure the whole thing will populate Rick Santorum’s nightmares for the rest of his life.
The music, if you can still call it music, was not really the matter, the matter was attention, and Nicki Minaj wanted plenty of it. After M.I.A.’s middle finger coup, it was her turn, she showed her Madonna-Lady-Gaga side, put her let’s-offend-as-many-people-as-possible outfit, but it was certainly not the most subtle one! It was really difficult to miss the provocation,… She made her point with a sludge hammer to crush a pin.
And, as I said, Donohue didn’t approve, this is what he wrote in an article called ‘Is Nicki Minaj Possessed?’
‘Minaj’s performance began on stage with a mock confessional skit. This was followed by a taped video depicting a mock exorcism. With stained glass in the background, she appeared on stage again with choir boys and monks dancing.
Perhaps the most vulgar part was the sexual statement that showed a scantily clad female dancer stretching backwards while an altar boy knelt between her legs in prayer. Finally, “Come All Ye Faithful” was sung while a man posing as a bishop walked on stage; Minaj was shown levitating.’
If there are two words Catholics should abstain to use in the same sentence it is ‘sexual’ and ‘altar boy’, do they really need to remind us what everybody is thinking about?
But Donohue had even more beef against the Grammys than against Minaj:
‘None of this was by accident, and all of it was approved by The Recording Academy, which puts on the Grammys. Whether Minaj is possessed is surely an open question, but what is not in doubt is the irresponsibility of The Recording Academy. Never would they allow an artist to insult Judaism or Islam.
It’s bad enough that Catholics have to fight for their rights vis-à-vis a hostile administration in Washington without also having to fend off attacks in the entertainment industry. The net effect, however, will only embolden Catholics, as well as their friends in other faith communities.’
I was sure he would link this back to politics! Enough Minaj, they already have the Obama’s war against religion to fight against! God what happened to this country!
