Blowing In the Wind – Sam Cooke – From the 64 Live at the Copa album, quite as good as the Harlem Square in 63 and it proves Cooke didn’t really play the Jim Crow equal but different. The Copa was a big deal for Cooke but both albums show a pop pro wooing his audience and that’s about it. Even here. Even singing a great song for equality he is swinging it, the grunts are not the grunts of a James Brown. Cooke couldn’t help himself , he was made to seduce us.
John, I’m Only Dancing – David Bowie
My Old School – Steely Dan – Highlight of the show last week.
Just Tell Her Jim Said Hello – Elvis Presley
Fidelity – Regina Spektor – FLive and free at the Barnes and Noble on 17th street on Tuesday.
You’ll Never Get To Heaven if You Break My Heart – The Stylistics
Bleeding All Over You – Martha Wainwright
Zero – Yeah yeah Yeahs – For a rock band this is sure fucking synthy but for a dance band it is hot and smart. From “It’s Blitz”, one of the best albums this year.
Faith In Me – Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young – Has it been ten years since this terrific song from the really good “Looking Forward”? Yeah CNSY record a good album, I was shocked myself.
Germfree Adolescents – X Ray Specs
Crying Lightening – Arctic Monkeys – Return to form.
Strange behavior – N.A.S.A. – Sexyist song of the year
Kill The Director – The Wombats – England Uber Alles, as funny and smart as a song can get. The one about Joy division is about as good.
Jesus Was A Crossmaker – The Hollies – Allan Clarke was the English Roger McGuine. Not bad version, a little ovedone, and I will leave Mike to tell you about the original.
