As Alyson wrote and Marilyn have joined forces. I am really finding it hard to believe that actor Johnny Depp and industrial rocker Marilyn Manson will soon be collaborating on a song and yet it will definitely be happening.
The track will be on Manson’s upcoming album Born Villain. I can’t even believe that these two, of all people, would collaborate for a song. They don’t at all seem like a musical match and it’s almost laughable, yet they’ve reportedly been friends for years.
What’s interesting about this song is that it will be a cover; and not just any cover: a cover of Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain”. Now, I’ll admit that this song isn’t as well known to me considering I was born about 22 years after it was released, but it is familiar and I’m not sure if I can see Marilyn Manson and Johnny Depp singing it.
I’ve heard Johnny Depp singing before – most notably in the movie Sweeney Todd although I’m not sure that is applicable in this context – but I am still confused about how he will collaborate with Marilyn Manson. Depp could probably pull of a good cover of “You’re So Vain” on his own with maybe a piano or acoustic guitar to accompany him.
I’ve been a big fan of Marilyn Manson for a while now and I’m definitely very excited for his newest studio album. I am not, however, very eager to hear him cover “You’re So Vain”. I am of the opinion that he should stick to dirty, distorted, industrial rock.
If Manson, along with Depp, manages to turn this cover into another brilliantly insane industrialized rock song, I will be thoroughly impressed.
