Christmas sweaters are not the only bands’ outfits irritating people, this Thanksgiving t-shirt released by the Metal band Mastodon is actually causing much more controversy and generating more than 800 comments on their Facebook page. People are actually finding the design racist? Can you believe it, are people so first-degree they think that Mastodon members want to kill native Americans? Some people are so stranger to irony it kills me!
Does this make Picasso or Francis Ford Coppola pro war because one painted ‘Guernica’ and the other one made ‘Apocalypse Now’? Not that I am comparing this cartoon à la Raymond Pettibon to Picasso or Coppola, but you get what I mean. This is what the band posted to explain the shirt, because some people need some explanation to everything!
‘Regarding our Thanksgiving shirt, whether you choose to believe or not, the American Indians were massacred by the white settlers who became the Americans we are today.
This shirt represents this atrocity and celebrating in the face of this atrocity is chilling.
We may have a sick sense of humor, but we are far from being “Racist” as some of you who might not get it are calling us.’
The fact that they had to explain the purpose of the drawing ruins the whole thing, they shouldn’t have written anything to justify themselves and let stupid people stuck with their one-level interpretation of things, these same people must completely miss what good art is about. There are some pretty sick and awful comments in this page! And no, it couldn’t be compared to a shirt depicting a KKK member beating a black guy, or a nazi killing a Jewish guy, because, well, we don’t celebrate anything like this. See, I have to explain again? I thought it was the perfect shirt to ruin a good family diner/genocide celebration,… exactly what a metal/punk band should do, although it is way too yellow for me! And by genocide I was talking about the turkeys…
