When Bruce Springsteen performs a three hour set we get 30 songs, when Paul McCartney does the same length set we get 25% more as last nights truly epic 41 song set at London’s 02 proves unhesitatingly. Paul is the Ramones of 60s rockers!
It is a fine all over the place set list though, really, he co-wrote “Fourfiveseconds”, why not perform it? I’d rather that then “Save Us”, New’s opening track, a raucous if minor little rocker. “Hope For The Future” is there, buried deep, his pretty good video game track.
And though not really a shocker, 41 songs and the man hasn’t skimmed his back pages, so many songs didn’t make it in you have to ask for a recount. Though “New” and “Queenie Eye” from his last album make an appearance. “New” is a really good one.
This is off David Lister’s The Telegraph review (here): “Besides, the predictable, even the pyrotechnics of Live and Let Die, or the audience sing-along with Hey Jude, are not the highlights of a McCartney show. The highlights are the surprises, those unexpected songs whose deceptive simplicity and infectious happiness immediately evoke an era. The opener was just such a one, 1964’s rarely performed Eight Days A Week.
“Those surprises included pure McCartney moments that heightened the already high emotions in the audience, I’ve Just Seen a Face,’ ‘We Can Work It Out,’ ‘And I Love Her,’ a rousing version of ‘All Together Now’, his children’s song from the Yellow Submarine film, to set alongside the better remembered ‘Eleanor Rigby,’ ‘Lady Madonna’ ‘Let It Be’, and ‘The Long and Winding Road’, the purity of his voice when he sat at the piano for those last two making a nonsense of claims that it has lost its lustre.”
