One Direction Admit Copying… The Clash?

So you thought that this One Direction’s song ‘Live While We’re Young’ was reminding you something? You are not alone, as a lot of Twitter’s users had found some close similarities between the intro of the boy band’s song and that of the Clash’s classic, ‘Should I Stay Or Should I Go’… What? Are you talking about The Clash and One Direction in the same sentence?

You know, this famous intro, this guitar riff followed by this scratching noise, yes it sounds so close it can’t be a coincidence. Of course after these first seconds, the songs have nothing in common, but this was enough to irritate the punk band’s fans, and me included… how did they dare, it’s a total rip-off?

NME is reporting that One Direction’s member Harry Styles spoke about it in an interview with BBC Newsbeat, declaring:

‘It was kind of on purpose though. It’s a great riff, so…’

So he is admitting it is the case and has no shame about it? His band mate Louis Tomlinson was a little bit more contrived when saying:

‘I assume it must be quite difficult to do a unique riff now because there have been so many songs – surely there's only so many riffs you can pull out?’

Well, yes it’s difficult to come up with something new, that's why only people with talent can do it… Some are gonna say, calm down, it’s only the intro, but the intro is what hook you up on a song! Plus, it is becoming an habit for One Direction, they had already borrowed the intro of Grease’s ‘Summer Nights’ for the intro of their song ‘What Makes You Beautiful’…

I doubt these kids write their own songs, but believe me, this reflects the mentality of this Facebook-iPhone-addicted generation so much: it’s a difficult task but someone has already did it very well, so why not stealing it? Actually, the worst part is that they don’t even think it is stealing. Would you pass an English exam if you copy an essay found on the internet? No, it’s called plagiarism, and they should pay the Clash some royalties, or the Clash should sue rappers get sued all the time for this kind of behavior. But it’s not gonna happen obviously, and One Direction will be rewarded instead.
