When Paul Thomas Anderson teams up with actors, he does it in repeat, he is one of these authors who has built a family around himself and that’s why his movies are so personal. He also seems to do the same thing with musicians and Jonny Greenwood will once again team up with Anderson for scoring the upcoming movie ‘Inherent Vice’. It is their third collaboration, as the Radiohead multi-instrumentalist already composed the music for Anderson’s last two features, 2007’s ‘There will be Blood’ and 2012’s ‘The Master’.
According to Film Music Reporter, ‘Inherent Vice’ is adapted after Thomas Pynchon’s 2009 book, and set in Los Angeles in the 60s following ‘the drug-fueled detective Larry “Doc” Sportello as he investigates the case of a kidnapped girl’. The cast is once again extremely interesting and includes Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Jena Malone, Martin Short, Maya Rudolph and even musician Joanna Newsom! I just wonder whether she will have some musical part in the film. Meanwhile Greenwood is about to compose and record the soundtrack with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, so we can expect once again a grand-scale score, with vibrant strings and noisy weirdness.
Personally, I would go see anything Anderson puts out there, but when there is such a cast (Joaquin Phoenix again!) and Radiohead’s musical touch, I get the feeling my head could explode. The only very sad note is the absence of Philip Seymour Hoffman who died a few days ago and was an Anderson regular.
