Yuck, not much going on this week, and most of what is is a little iffy…
Written In Reverse – Spoon
“I’m writing this to you in reverse, someone better call a hearse”? Will somebody lend these guys a thesaurus. I’ll admit to not much liking Spoon but I like em a lot more than I like this fucking awful walking blues number. There is nothing easier in the world to make a mess of than the blues unless your name includes the words “blind” “howling” or “muddy”. -and white guys can sometimes play it but never, ever sing it. And Spoon can’t do either. The solo near the end of the song should be shot at dawn. The fake ending is very Freddy Kruger. I hope everybody involved is thoroughly ashamed.
Echo – R. Kelly
I am a little sick of this, I am a little sick of R. Kelly waggling his dick in my face morning, noon and night, and though this is a pretty good Kelly sex song it isn’t a great kelly sex song. But I’m gonna make it single of the week for three reasons.
1. he yodels.
2.Dan Aquilante doesn’t like it
3. It’s a slow week
Hatef–k – The Bravery
The Bravery sound like My Chemical romance circa Black parade if MCR knew how to keep their ego in check and had a singer who tripped up on his goth only to land on his glam. Bless the lord and pass the eyeliner.
What You Do to Me – Blakroc
Geez, more blues? The Black Keys and various hip hoppers, most relevantly Jim Jones sounding better than he has in a long time and Make It Hot r&b singer Nicole Wray. The only problem with this song is the song and it sounds soooo good you almost forgive the song for being soooo bad.
We Belong To The Music (featuring Miley Cyrus) – Timbaland
I wonder if Miley asked Timbaland who this Jay-Z cat is? The follow-up to “Party In The USA” is this collab with Timbaland it begs the question who is doing who a favor. This is the poppiest of Timbaland productions, he doesn’t thump he bounces like a pretty ball through the layers and layers and layers of overdubs and it’s another good song about dancing: “We don’t answer to you, we belong to the music”.
