New Fucked Up Album and The Songs They are Giving Away

Fucked up is giving away another mp3, ‘Queen of Hearts’ from their upcoming album ‘David Comes To Life’, and this is what the band posted on their blog about the song:

‘David and Veronica meet and fall in love before things start to go pear shaped. What about the music, you ask? Well we wrote most of this song in 2004 or 2005 and made up the chorus and the bridge over the summer. That intro riff has been rattling around inside my head since we released Dance of Death. There's a few other tracks in this collection that are as old, kind of crazy. We were listening to a lot of Smashing Pumpkins at the time, so maybe you can hear a bit of a resemblance.’

The song is poppier than what I had heard from them indeed, with a lot of female vocals, Damian Abraham’s raucous howling delivery being almost the only really punk thing left.

But you can actually download three other songs ‘The Other Shoe’, ‘Ship Of Fools’, and ‘A Little Death’, they have already posted on the album website.

The more I find stuff about these guys the more intrigued I am: This album will actually be a concept album, a rock opera in four acts, with characters and drama, like some kind of Shakespearian’s play, set in a fictional British town during Thatcher’s time. From what I have read, a certain David is the main character but for more details, this is what Abraham said to Pitchfork last January:

‘It takes place in a fictitious English town, and it's about a guy, David, who works at a light bulb factory. He falls in love with this activist. She subsequently dies during an accident. You never really find out what the accident is because we couldn't think of it [laughs]. Then David's on trial. There's this prosecutor who was secretly in love with the activist but is also aware that he's in a play. Then it gets really heady and drugged-out.
It's also kind of like Rashomon in that there are certain moments told from different perspectives. I'm not saying it's as good [laughs]. It's me doing most of the characters and guest vocalists coming in and out throughout the entire thing. We're still working out the guests. It's very much a work in progress.’

Anyway the album, which was recorded with Sleigh Bells’ producer Shane Stoneback, is out on June 7th, and for the four free songs, go to:
