Does Neil Young know that his Twitter adventure will be only remember by this hilarious Bukowsky-esque sentence, ‘Who is Bono?’
On Wednesday afternoon, the iconic star answered to fan questions on Twitter , and #askneil became a trendy topic for several hours. I couldn’t follow it live, but this exchange between Neil and a fan was so funny that nothing else matters:
A fan called @SmokeyDouglas: ‘@neilyoung From the new generation of bands coming through at the moment, who do you rate? #askneil’
Neil: ‘@SmokeyDouglas foster the people #askneil’
Another fan called @akemi99: ‘what do you like about foster the people? #askneil btw, bono said he likes them, too… it is surprising two super stars like them..’
Neil: ‘@akemi99 who is Bono? #askneil’
I mean, the rest doesn’t matter, the fact that Young said that he might record with Dave Grohl, that he likes Jack White and Radiohead, bought Jimmy Reed’s ‘Rockin’ with Jimmy Reed’, and will re-relelease his out-of-print 1973 album ‘Times Fades Away’, no, none of these things do matter, just this little sentence ‘Who is Bono?’
But his isn’t the first time Neil Young slams Bono, as in his new autobiography ‘Waging Heavy Peace: A Hippie Dream’, Young had this to say about Bono’s tribute speech for Frank Sinatra at the Grammys:
‘A recently successful artist came out and introduced Sinatra in a very long-winded oratory, and then Frank came out. He had just started talking when he was out of time. The band began to play and the introducing artist came back out and walked him off. Sinatra was definitely not finished speaking. I would have loved to hear him, but there was no time left. Frank looked confused and disappointed when he was escorted off. He was just getting started and couldn’t believe he was cut short. That’s TV. A rambling intro that was much longer than Frank’s cut-short speech meant that time was up for one of the greatest legends ever in the history of music. That’s life. It pissed me off.’
'A recently successful artist', he couldn't be more contemptuous! See how he doesn’t even name him? Bono can cover as many Neil Young‘s songs as he wants, I guess the old rocker will always ignore the U2 frontman.
