Metropolitan Museum of Art Presents, Punk: Chaos To Couture

"PUNK: Chaos to Couture details Punk's journey from an expression of anti-establishment rebellion and do-it-yourself style to a leading inspiration for today's high fashion designers. Presented as an immersive multimedia, multi-sensory experience, the exhibition will showcase clothing animated with period music videos and soundscaping audio techniques — an experience not to be missed! "

May 9th thru August 14th, 2013 you can wander the holy halls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and watch how street culture evolves into haute couture.  Its a scary thing.  As a person who was very involved with the movement my rebellion becoming a fashion staple is stunning.

Seeing 6 yr old girls wearing skulls or upside down crosses, Doc Martens or spikes is always a bit brow raising.  Really is it that common now?  Back when I was literally ushered out of shops for my appearance alone, now I most likely cant afford the designer take on what I made with thrift shop mens shirts and a sharpie.

From the Met's website:

Focusing on the relationship between the punk concept of "do-it-yourself" and the couture concept of "made-to-measure," the seven galleries will be organized around the materials, techniques, and embellishments associated with the anti-establishment style. Themes will include New York and London, which will tell punk's origin story as a tale of two cities, followed by Clothes for Heroes and four manifestations of the D.I.Y. aesthetic—Hardware, Bricolage, Graffiti and Agitprop, and Destroy.Presented as an immersive multimedia, multisensory experience, the clothes will be animated with period music videos and soundscaping audio techniques.

When my brother sent me the invite for this event he wrote 'does this make you feel old my darling baby sister?'… my response

"Hell no bro, I was THERE!"
