Back in the mid-90s I was with my niece Louba in line to see Marshall Crenshaw at the Bottom Line when he walked by. I said hello and introduced him to Louba, he was really gracious, though I am sure he didn’t recognize me.
The set was dynamite, a solo performance with the audience shouting songs and Marshall blowing em out of the water one by one. So some 20 years later I am, if anything, even more excited to see the greatest pop star if my generating in person yet again. Last year I interviewed Marshall (read it here) and he couldn’t have been nicer if he tried, at the end he made it clear he did remember me and really, for a huge fan such as myself, I couldn’t be more honored.
What would I have him play this time? Since I will probably only get one, I guess I’ll stick with “Radio Girl” but if I get more? His awesome cover of Dave Alvin’s “Jack And Diane” , anything off Life’s Too Short, maybe I’m Sorry *But So Is Brenda Lee)”, Hendrix “Fire”…
The Bottle Rockets are a great band and they are backing him so that makes… hang about, I haven’t told you where: City Winery, or when: July 8th. Doors at 6pm, show at 8pm. So business as usual for the folks at CW –not my favorite room but not bad.
I expect great things from this show. Think I might try for some newer stuff… maybe “Stranger And Stranger” if it isn’t too bleak
