As if the existence of Maroon 5 wasn’t annoying enough already, they have just released a video for their song ‘Animals’ that has generated lots of heat Levine plays a butcher turned psychopath predator, who is stalking a blonde beauty, and fantasizing about her while dancing in the middle of slaughtered animal corpses. Even though nothing really violent is happening (just hot sex), the two lovers making love while covered by animal blood is totally repulsive and will probably give Morrissey nightmares for the rest of his life… Who do these Maroon 5 guys think they are? Marilyn Manson? This horror clip is so inappropriate for their dull dancing pop song, that it is comical!
Of course, there is the metaphorical parallel between women and meat, and the video has been very criticized by advocacy groups (such as RAINN, Rape, Abuse, Incest, National Network, the National Sexual Violence Resource Center according to the Independent and TMZ) which are saying that the video is glorifying violence against women and even rape… really? Have these people watched ‘True Blood’? Of course, the lyrics of the song were announcing something of this sort (‘Baby I’m preying on you tonight/ Hunt you down eat you alive’…’Don’t deny the animal that comes alive when I’m inside you’), and subtlety is not exactly Maroon 5’s best instrument,… but this time they took a tank to make a point.
when I think about it. this mini horror movie is not even scary, it’s just repulsive, and I would seriously question the sanity of someone who fantasizes to make love under a shower of blood! Sure it’s just a video, a work of fiction, but the fact that this is Levine’s wife, Victoria’s Secret supermodel Behati Prinsloo, in the video, gives another perspective… I don’t want to know what they do at home!
Maroon 5’ Levine told Access Hollywood that his ‘crazy idea’ for the video was ‘really dark and weird and cool’… Cool? Personally, I don’t care about his weird vision of sex but I am offended by all these dead animals hanging on a hook, and the trivialization of killing animals while using them as the casual décor of a music video glorifying sex and violence… so disgusting and dumb! Can he say no animals were hurt in the making of this video? He can’t!
