Marilyn Manson is really sort of a nob. He comes across as this bad ass freak-a-zoid, but like a funhouse in the light of day- take of the camera filter and he's just a pasty white jowly dude with no brows.
He has this annoying way of speaking sorta stoner slow and from the back of the throat- not unlike Lady Gaga. Its that just woke up I'm sexy and wasted voice we have all heard on a Sunday morning, The reason I bring this up is the interview currently up on NME. Manson sitting there in powdered alabaster and Chanel red lipstick is really just a spin off of great men in make up before him. Hi Robert Smith, hows the look going? In this clip watch and you'll see rip offs of Smith, From the Cure and a snip of Joey Ramone mock shyness. Yup, this cat is about as original as a Pez dispenser.
So there is nothing unique, per se, about Marilyn, and really he has nothing to say. We listen though cuz we secretly hope he isn't a prepackaged promo kit and maybe has dead bodies buried in his basement. I don't think so. I'm sorry- but he is not really as cool as his image would point.
This all being said I am a huge fan. I really love the industrial sound he creates and visually his music videos scare the flying squee out of me every time. Its the arrogance that makes me want to kick him in the cup. As if he is doing us a favor by being so cool. The interview shows the more idiotic side of Manson as he whines about how the record company interfered with his art. His record company paid for that hair dye so perhaps he had better weight the good vs bad of label lovin'.
"I just want people to fear, and from fear comes respect" is the quote of the clip. He never set out to shock people, as he states clearly but rather wants to be feared. I don't fear him at all, he's actually sort of funny. The best way to look insane is to shave off your eyebrows and smear your lipstick, by doing so- you will gain respect?
Audibly Mansons metal is hard and angry but in no way scary. It's his videos that are so well done by fantastic directors. So this cat should most likely stick to that field. Hes getting a bit old and rather wiggly in the folds, its time to put it in the dungeon and simply record. The dark glasses hide his age, a trend you see more often than ever lately. Does anyone else see a bit of Nicholas Cage in this photo though? Weird, ay?
I don't respect Manson, he is a performer, he has not done anything for me to respect. I suppose as a fellow human there is that element but other than that- he's an act. He's shallow and he really shouldn't do interviews- shut up and perform before you tarnish your image.
