In anticipation of the first Rock NYC interview ever, Bret Jensen and my conversation with the Love Grenades later today, I went in search of more info about the band and found this excellent cover of the Tom Tom Club’s “Genius Of Love” called “Genius Of Fun” off website hardcandymusic.com. Well, a little more than a cover. Grenades leader Wight rewights (sic) the lyric from Tina’s “Watcha gonna do when you get out of jail? I’m gonna have some fun. What do you consider fun? Fun, natural fun” to Elizabeth’s “Watcha gonna do when your mom says no but you gotta save pride and you gotta go? I’m gonna hafta run.” Cool, right? It’s called targeting your demo.
That’s not all that’s fun on “Fun” -the bass hook is more omnipotent (I know, gimme a break its early in the morning) than on the original (believe it or not), it’s actually pretty relentless. Also it’s a gas to hear modern girl about town Wight’s proto-hip hop rap on the verses. The chorusses is Grenades redux: cool and hot simultaneously in a way the Tom Tom Club simply wasn’t.
A holding pattern? Sure. But a good one.
