Listen Up: 9-15-12

1. The Once And Future Carpenter – The Avett Brothers – I bet bet bet they suck live, but on record, well, the newbie crosses over to indie land, a sweetly undisturbed folkie indie harmony country type indie – Grade: B+

2.Standing On A Curb – Spider Bags – McGee does bemused better than anybody, he is strident but with a quizzical look on his face – Grade: A+

3. Nuclear Family – Green Day –  If you plan on ripping off the Clash, it helps when you do so in aid of a song this good – Grade: A

4. Spraypaint – the Disco Biscuits – If I could just stand their vocals -which are too pitched too high here, this would be as big as a song gets for me – Grade: A-

5. Groundhog Day – Corin Tucker – OK, so you know what the feminism stuff is down to, but look at it this way. Imagine you leave nyc for a coupla years, come back, check up on your friends and none of them have changed. That's this – Grade: A

6. Early Roman Kings – Bob Dylan – One of the great album tracks, is a walking blues with a great lyric and cool harp – Grade: A

7. Overtones – Jonny Greenwood – Actually,quite intensely lovely for a soundtrack track – Grad: B

8. Belsen Was A Gas – Sex Pistols –  A bad pun and as crappy in the studio as it ever was live – Grade: C-

9. Missing – The xx – Haunting dirge – Grade: C+

10. Your Early Stuff – Pet Shop Boys – Depressing stuff about being forgotten… which PSBs aren't, so why so glum? Grade: B
