Guards, Cult, these two bands are unavoidably connected to each other because of their sibling relationships, but if Cults, lead by sister Madeline Follin, have already released a debut album in 2011, Guards, lead by brother Richie Follin, are about to release their own on February 5th!
Both bands do not sound entirely different, they both have a big 60s-70s vibe, but Richie Follin has very precisely described himself his sound as ‘pop wave doom’, and from what I remember of a show at the Bootleg, they also sounded more epic, ambitious, with a sort of the-Verve-meets-big-uplifting-choruses idea, that was very seductive.
You can now stream ‘Ready to Go’ off the upcoming and confidently entitled album ‘In Guards We Trust’, and I hadn’t realized that it’s actually the third single they make available, after ‘Silver Lining’ and ‘Coming True’!
If ‘Ready to Go’ is all bells-chiming and dreamy vocals with some epic bombast à la Arcade Fire that may make you want to run up a mountain, ‘Silver Lining’ is an infectious sunny poppy tune that could you make kiss everybody. ‘Coming True’ carries on the grandiose pop with a sadder tone and a soaring chorus. It’s hard to pass the fact that every song is incredibly catchy, so this is an album to definitively be looking forward to:
