Sharon Van Etten

Brooklyn singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten has shared a new song, the closing track to her upcoming fourth studio album, ‘Are We There’, and this is a gorgeous ballad sung with swagger and harmony galore. ‘Every Time The Sun Comes Up’ starts slowly with pounding drums and delicate guitar melody, then develops into a spacious orchestration and a great hook in the chorus. But it is especially Sharon’s unusual dragging vocal effect that you will notice here, she does not even try to blow us away with her crystalline and ethereal voice this time, rather she is more fierce and vengeful than ever with a latent submission in the lyrics. ‘Every time the sun comes up, I’m in trouble’ she repeats with a sort of fatality, that goes with her sight lost in the haze on the cover art featured  for the song.

Everything seems to go wrong in this relationship, and she sounds like a woman who is preparing her exit from a situation, with this great bold line: ‘People say I’m a one-hit wonder
/But what happens when I have two?/
I washed your dishes, but I shit in your bathroom’, and this only makes you wonder,… is it too much information or just plain fearless affirmation? I opt for the second. Sharon has never been a hit maker anyway, she does much more than that, she wraps her pain around her country-tangled songs and expressive vocals to tells us about hurt.

‘Are We There’ is out May 27th on Jagjaguwar, and meanwhile catch Sharon on tour.
