Are you aware that this thing exists? I am talking about the Aphex Twin/Taylor Swift mashup album, which can sound very odd when you listen to it in its entirety, but I am for such thing to exist on the internet, as long as this makes fun of Miss Taylor perfect Swift. Cartoonist David Rees has made an entire mashup album of Aphex Twin and Taylor Swift songs, combining ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ with ‘Girl/Boy’ and ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ with ‘4’, and the result is quite unbearable at time – just listen to ‘Everything Has Cornmouthed’ or ‘Starlightlicker’, I mean Taylor Swift’s annoying auto-tuned nasal vocals dominate the whole thing – or quite interesting at other times – it actually works fine on certain songs, like ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Girl/Boygether’ or ‘You Belong with Avril’.
Both artists have released a new album, so I understand why Rees picked these two, but honestly have Taylor Swift’s fans even heard of Aphex Twin The result is an 8-tract album cleverly entitled ‘Aphex Swift’ but my favorite part is Rees’s explanation (that he posted here on his blog) for doing such a thing. First of all, he had a lot of fun doing it, secondly, he thinks that both artists have a lot in common: they are both super romantic, since ‘Taylor Swift made her name by writing big-hearted confessional songs for tween girls’ and ‘a lot of Aphex Twin’s music’ ‘is also super romantic — saccharine, even’, and Rees even wonders whether Richard D. James is not in fact protecting his ‘bleeding heart’ ‘behind a crazy tangle of barbed-wire snare rolls’… But that’s not it, Rees thinks both artists are also both scary, Aphex Twin because he is camera shy and uses ‘a lot of cryptic/creepy imagery in his videos’, and Taylor because she is robotic and her lyrics ‘can be sorta cruel and sarcastic in a classic “mean girl” way’…
I should add that Rees is a big fan of both of them and is hoping for a marriage…I say nooooo, it would probably end into another break-up then a full Swift album of songs would follow, so please save us from another of these!
Listen to Alphex Swift if you dare:
