If you feel like it, you can now listen to another track of Julian Casablancas + the Voidz’s upcoming album ‘Tyranny’, and after ‘Human Sadness’, the 11-minute epic number that Julian released on YouTube about a week ago, here is ‘Where No Eagles Fly’, which debuted on BBC Radio 6 on Monday morning.
If you were horrified by the first one and its crazy structure, or as a matter of fact lack of structure, be reassured, this time the song sounds more like a conventional song, with a far less bombastic and symphonic development. It is much more like a punk-post-punk freaking out track, with a maddening tempo and some semi-screaming vocals which seem to be experiencing some great danger – something you could logically expect on an album called ‘Tyranny’. It’s dark and cold, agitated and noisy, aggressive and anxious, I would even say there is something nihilistic about it, and I am not saying this because the radio DJ said, just after playing the song, it reminded him about Marilyn Manson… I don’t think so! Others will find the song closer to a Strokes song, but I think it’s different enough. I just love this somber baseline opening the song, the furious crescendo of vocals mixed with striking guitars and the rapid changes during the 4 minutes of it,… there is a lot going on, it’s surprising and I am just not a fan of the Nintendo-like tidbits at one point.
You can right now buy the song on iTunes right now, before the release of ‘Tyranny’, out September 23rd on Casablancas’ Cult Records imprint. For some reason, I have never been a fan of the Strokes but I greatly enjoy this new Casablancas’ material, and I am very tempted to go check them live at the Wiltern in November!
